December 19 Why People Leave Home

Why do people leave their homelands?

Think about the journeys of the Holy Family to Bethlehem and later to Egypt. Take a walk and ponder all of the reasons compelling people to leave their homelands.

The security of national borders is a worldwide issue. Yet, inspite of severe hardship, tens of millions are leaving their homes. Why? Can we help?

  1. Economic Causes: financial systems are the most common drivers of migration.
  2. Social Causes: migration occurs due to the desire for better living conditions, educational opportunities, or health services.
  3. Political Causes: government instability, conflict, and persecution are strong drivers of migration, often referred to as forced migration.
  4. Environmental Causes - their homelands have become uninhabitable.

Let us Pray:

Dear God, may the Laudato Sí Advent Calendar inspire me to regularly take action to ensure the care of the Earth, our common home which you so graciously created for us, your servants.  Amen.
