Update: November 17, 2024
Thanks to our generous parishioners, Virginia and her six children will have coats and boots to face our Chicago winter. Members of our Refugee Assistance Team accompanied Virginia to shop for winter gear. The four oldest children are enjoying school. Her daughter Renata received high honors for advancement in her studies. Emiliano, who had a bone marrow transplant at Lurie Children’s Hospital, is receiving good reports from his doctors and may be cleared soon to attend school. The family is truly grateful for all the assistance with rent, food, transportation, and friendship that is being offered by our parishioners. Plans are underway to shop, cook, and help provide the family with a Thanksgiving feast.
Update: September 8, 2024
The Refugee Assistance Group is continuing their efforts to support the Contreras Family, as their four-year old son Emiliano receives treatment for leukemia. To join the Group, contact Peggy Brown at pegita@aol.com. Donations to the Refugee Assistance Fund can be made through GiveCentral (choose Project Refugee) or by writing a check to Assumption with Project Refugee in the memo field.
Update: June 30, 2024
Our “adopted” family, having travelled to Chicago from Mexico last summer, has moved into a home in McKinley Park whose rent is being paid by our generous parishioners.
Four year old Emiliano has received a bone marrow transplant from his 6 year old brother and continues to be treated for his leukemia at Lurie Children’s Hospital. Members of our group are driving Emiliano and his mother to the medical appointments once or twice a week. They are so grateful for our help. More drivers are needed if anyone has time to help.
Babysitters are also needed at various times if anyone is interested. We are asking for donations to continue so we can help with food and transportation costs and babysitting if we can’t get enough volunteers.
This family of a mom and six children ages 2 to 12 are adapting to life in Chicago with the help of many volunteers. We hope to bring them on a few outings this summer and welcome everyone’s participation.
